The agro-industrial sector has been dominated by the production and export of sugar for decades. However, with the demise of the sugar-protocol and the drastic price reduction of sugar on the European Union (EU) market, the sector’s profile has changed. This evolution has also been triggered by the global food crisis and changing food habits to the benefit of convenience foods, with an exigency on quality and food safety.
